Sony is a name that is associated with superior quality and innovative design for decades and its latest offering the P-Series Lifestyle PC delivers exactly what is expected from it. A latest entrant in the fast growing mini notebook market, Sony P-series Lifestyle PC is bound to set new benchmarks and break current standards in innovation and technology.

Sporting an 8 inch widescreen display of 1600×768 pixel resolution, the P-series Lifestyle PC enables its users to view pictures and movies on the move with ease. The small screen size does not limit the highly detailed view of emails and documents because of its higher resolution; in fact 1600×768 pixels is one of the highest resolution offered by an atom powered laptop.

Being virtually the same size as that of a pocket diary, this product measures less than an inch in thickness. Color choice gives the Sony’s P-series Lifestyle PC a sense of personality. Some users may not like the lack of a touch pad, but the pointing stick can be easily adapted to. While a middle mouse button for scrolling is a clever technique, the availability of an extra button for aligning the open windows in a side by side manner imparts flexibility on its small screen.

Carrying a bag full of never before seen features, Sony P-series Lifestyle PC boasts mobile broadband, GPS antenna, Faster next generation Wi-Fi and the ever obvious Bluetooth for increased peripheral connectivity. Having an innovative design and weighting just 1.4 lbs, this little wonder contains a lithium ion battery and runs on an Intel 1.33 GHz Atom processor. Providing an estimated battery life of 4 hours and a standard storage of 60 GB, the Sony P-series Lifestyle PC comes laden with a 2 GB RAM, MMC/SD/Memory stick Pro/Duo memory card slot for the ultimate data compatibility.

Sony’s P-series Lifestyle PC works on a Linux powered, ‘instant-on’ environment that enables the users to quickly start their personal computers. Apart from providing a decent web surfing experience, this also helps in reducing the power consumption and thus saves an already miniature battery. Available with windows vista as a default choice, this laptop will also be windows 7 compatible. Propriety software makes the Lifestyle PC feature rich and easy to use.

KEY TECHNICAL SPECS:

- Features the Intel Atom 1.33 GHz processor an optimum choice for portable laptops

- 8-inch LED backlit display with 1600×768 pixel resolution adds to the package

- Weights just 1.4 lbs and provides up to 4 hours of estimated battery life

Dell Xps M1210 Laptop Review

Put simply, the XPS M1210 is the most powerful and feature-packed 12.1-inch notebook we’ve seen. This sleek 4.8-pound system combines a dual-core processor with a 256MB discrete graphics card, plus integrated mobile broadband and a built-in webcam. Throw in Dell’s top-notch service for XPS customers and you have one of the best thin-and-light notebooks of the year, albeit at a steep price of $2,356.

Dell’s **** thin-and-light is the perfect combination of style and power. Pop the black top on this mini Media Center notebook, and you’re greeted with a dazzling gray-and-silver color scheme. Despite its demure (11.7 x 8.7 x 1.2 inches) size, the M1210 offers a well-spaced keyboard that doesn’t leave you feeling cramped when typing. The only thing we don’t like about it is that the Page Up key is too close to the right Shift key.

Above the keyboard reside three buttons for Power, Dell MediaDirect (which allows you to access media files without booting into Windows), and the 1.3-megapixel Logitech QuickCam. A touchpad with a built-in scrollbar sits beneath the keyboard. The front bezel contains a set of illuminated multimedia buttons for volume, play/pause, stop, fast forward, and rewind, which really come in handy while on a flight or when sitting in other cramped quarters.

Watching DVDs on the 12.1-inch TrueLife screen was a pleasure, as the colors were bright and the visuals sharp. The screen maintains a wide viewing angle, so two people can watch a flick on this system at once. Dual headphone jacks on the front of the M1210 (dell xps m1210 battery) mean two people can listen simultaneously, too. The speakers below the display delivered tinny sound, which was a letdown for a notebook with such strong multimedia features.

Connectivity options include Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, but the M1210′s ( compaq presario r3000 battery) main wireless attraction is the integrated Dell Mobile Broadband Card that connects to Verizon’s EV-DO service. (A Cingular HSDPA card should be an option by the time you read this.) Road warriors who don’t want to concern themselves with tedious hotspot hunting will love this feature, as they can connect to the Web at broadband speeds from anywhere there’s coverage. We averaged a very good 563 Kbps, which equated to speedy Web surfing. However, we did notice a few dropped connections when commuting from New Jersey to Manhattan.

The rotating 1.3-MP Logitech Quickcam sits atop the screen and works in tandem with an omnidirectional microphone for voice or video chats using the included copy of Skype. The video quality wasn’t as good as an external webcam, but it’s convenient to have on board. Face tracking technology keeps a subject centered in the frame, so you’re free to move about a bit without ruining the shot.

The M1210 is a productivity champ, as the 2.16-GHz Core Duo T2600 processor combined with the 1GB of RAM notched a blistering score of 286 on our MobileMark 2005 benchmark test. As we expected, this machine didn’t hiccup when we ran a virus scan and a DVD simultaneously. Even with all that power, the M1210′s battery lasted an impressive 4 hours and 29 minutes with Wi-Fi activated.

What makes this Dell unique among 12.1-inch notebooks is that it houses an Nvidia GeForce Go 7400 graphics card with a whopping 256MB of dedicated video memory. The M1210 turned in a 3DMark03 score of 4,456, which is good for a notebook in this weight class. When we ran our F.E.A.R. test, the XPS M1210 delivered 26 fps at 800 x 600 pixels, which is certainly playable (and better than the Sony VAIO SZ’s 23 fps) but less than stellar. Notching up the resolution to 1024 x 768 simply isn’t an option, as the system mustered only 5 fps.

In addition to a one-year warranty, the M1210 (hp pavilion zd8000 battery)comes with Dell’s white-glove XPS service. The package includes a 15-month subscription to security software and quick access to a dedicated group of XPS-trained support specialists.

Offering integrated mobile broadband, a webcam, handy multimedia controls, excellent battery life, and DVD burning in a lightweight, stylish package, the Dell XPS M1210 is a winner on several fronts. Those in search of a strong all-around portable performer with money to burn can’t go wrong with this system.

Audio and Speakers

This is usually the part in a review where I say “get a pair of external speakers”. But I’m not going to say that. I was astounded at the sound the M1210 provided. In a 12″ notebook you usually figure you’re lucky to get system sounds coming from a speaker on the bottom of the notebook. I played music and watched DVDs on the M1210 and the nicely positioned forward firing 4-ohm speakers generated very good audio quality. I am so impressed that I’ll say, if you’re travelling, save on the bulk and leave the external speakers at home — the loudness and clarity from these built-in speakers is more than adequate. Bravo!

The two headphone jacks is kind of a cool thing too. On a plane or in the back of a car you could fire up a movie and watch it with your fellow passenger each using your own headphones.

Wireless Communications

Dell has pulled out all of the stops in making the XPS M1210 (dell inspiron 9400 battery)wireless capable. Here’s a quick rundown of the wireless options:

Wi-Fi Choices: Intel Pro/Wireless 3945 WiFi 802.11 a/b/g, Dell Wireless 1390 802.11g, Dell Wireless 1490 802.11a/g

Bluetooth (Dell Wireless 350 BlueTooth internal wireless card)

WWAN (Cellular Broadband internet access) Choices:

o Dell Wireless 5500 Mobile Broadband 3G HSDPA (Cingular US)

o Dell Wireless 5700 Mobile Broadband CDMA EVDO (Verizon Wireless US)

The broadband cellular communication addition to the M1210 (dell inspiron 9300 battery)is much welcomed. Dell provides the option of configuring your M1210 with an internal antenna for either EVDO or HSDPA. My review unit M1210 came configured with the Dell Wireless 5700 EVDO modem. Dell puts the cellular antenna in the screen, no ugly antenna sticking out. One important consideration, if you choose the web cam AV communications package (about a $100 option), but don’t choose EVDO service at the time of purchase, you can upgrade and add WWAN later since it’s just a mini-PCI card you’d need to plug in.

EVDO via Verizon is a real treat, if you have an existing Verizon wireless account it’s $60 a month for unlimited data transfer and if you don’t then the cost is $80 a month. You also have the option of paying $15 for 24 hour access to the Verizon EVDO network. If you’re a highly mobile person EVDO can be a real blessing and keep you from fretting about where you’ll find the next hotspot.

Speaking of finding wireless hotspots, Dell has included a unique feature called “Wi-Fi Catcher” located on the left side of the notebook. You can use this switch to turn off all wireless radios by putting it in the Off position, but far cooler than that, push it all the way forward and it will blink green as it searches for a Wi-Fi network and if one is present it glows solid green, if none is found it shows orange. This Wi-Fi Catcher works whether the notebook is on, off or in standby mode. So there’s no need to boot up and search for wireless networks, just push this button to find out.

Battery

Instead of running battery benchmark tests I used a real world battery drain test. At 100% charge I set the screen to half-brightness and pulled the plug on the XPS M1210. I then performed various tasks such as downloading and installing Half Life 2 and playing it for a bit, surfing the web, downloading and installing 3DMark05, watching 10 minutes of a DVD, edited some photos for this review and also turned off wireless and just let the M1210 (compaq presario v2000 battery) idle for some time. In doing all of this the 9-cell battery ran down to 5% charge and Windows shut the notebook down at 2h 58 mins of usage. Since the M1210 (hp pavilion dv1000 battery )here is configured with a dedicated graphics card and faster processor and I left wi-fi on, that time isn’t bad. If you had integrated graphics, wi-fi off and set your screen brightness lower you could easily achieve 4.5 hours. My test was pretty abusive in terms of using demanding programs while on battery power.

Hiring A Bar Mitzvah DJ: How To Do Better Than Eenie Meenie Minie Mo

The customer is (mostly) always right.

A client’s input is fabulous. DJ’s love to feed off of creative parents and perform to their expectations. But, there are times when parents should defer to the better judgment of the DJ, despite how they’ve envisioned the tenor of the party will unfold.

There’s rarely a Motzi, Candlelighting or Hora at a friends-only party. It’s just a basic, fun “record hop.”

However, if the Bar or Bat Mitzvah is for adults as well as friends (as most are) occasionally parents feel that “It’s my son’s day. Work for his friends. Don’t worry about our family. They’ll enjoy watching.”

Hey, it’s your dime and, if you insisted, your disc jockey will do it. But if this were your position, he might stress that the chance of what he perceives to be a successful function is negligible. He would **** leaving a party thinking “I told you so.” (But, by then, you would know it too!) Sure, the kids would have a great time. But for the adults, it would be like going to a restaurant with bad Musak. They’ll have their meal, light their candle, see what direction the party is going, kiss you good-bye and scoot out of there. Why stay if the music remains unintelligible and unfamiliar?

I’m NOT inferring that a DJ should play Sinatra for four hours. But…every kid is familiar with “I Will Survive,” “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” “The Twist,” “Shout,” “Respect” and “Stayin’ Alive.” I recently had girls request “My Boy Lollipop,” “Build Me Up Buttercup” and “Do Wah Diddy Diddy!”

These tunes were all released long before this group was BORN. (Some, before their PARENTS were born!) But they know the tunes. They love the beat, dance, sing the lyrics and don’t perceive them as “old folk’s songs.” So although your DJ must have a comprehensive, up-to-date music library including rap, hip-hop, rock or any current music trend, don’t have him spin new tunes exclusively, playing strictly to the kids. They’ll usually stay until the end of the party anyway, so the final hour presents itself as a better time to have music blend or trend mostly, or totally, to current.

What if you just can’t decide? Ties aren’t allowed. This is better than Eenie Meenie Minie Mo:

If it comes down to it, thirteen questions to ask (and answers to expect):

1. “Is my deposit refundable?”

No–deposits reserve date and time for you and you alone. Your DJ likely had to turn away other business to protect your date. Deposit range: 20-40%

2. “Do you charge more for climbing steps?”

Hopefully, it’s a moot point. Every piece of DJ equipment is HEAVY. Here’s our routine: out of the house, into the van, out of the van, into the hall, out of the hall, into the van, out of the van, into the house. DJs will do everything they can to keep the weight of each case to less than 50 pounds. Many would opt for doing an hour free rather than setting up and tearing down equipment. It’s no picnic. And they loathe a second story banquet hall. If there’s no elevator, he’s not a happy camper.

Most DJs don’t charge more, but you may see a contract that adds $3 per step, since the DJ will be unable to use his rolling cart and must make multiple trips on the staircase. Ugh!

3. “Do you have a web site?”

Every day DJs open sites. But many don’t have one for the same reasons they haven’t produced a video: a competent single-unit operator is able to fill his calendar without one. Remember, a good web designer doesn’t equal a good DJ. If he has one, of course, browse. But don’t judge him by it. Don’t hire him because he has a great one. Don’t ignore him if he doesn’t!

A company that produces generic brochures for DJs also sells a matching generic web site! So the same web site “look” belongs to many DJs territorially, with their name plugged in. You aren’t inquiring out-of-state and would never know this. There’s nothing wrong with it, of course. It’s just that it’s the brochure company’s creativity. Not your DJ’s.

4. “Do I need to provide a table?”

Yes, and be sure it’s sturdy, not a glass top or a card table. Generally a 6′ or 8′ or two 5′ rectangular tables suffice. Ask your DJ what his arrangement requirements are (straight, L-shaped or one in front, one in back). Your hall should supply them.

5. “Will you provide an equally high caliber replacement in the event of an emergency?”

Yes. Period. (Even if you don’t book through an agency, a pro knows to network.)

6. “Will you work an outdoor affair?”

Yes, with a caveat. He must be under a cover, not only to protect against inclement weather, but also to protect against sun damage to the equipment, which could be extensive during a summer luncheon. How far is the socket? Is there rain exposure there? Will the table be level on the grass? When the sun shifts, will he be exposed under the tent?

7. “Will you work overtime if requested?”

Yes, if no other job follows. Expect a prorated fee.

8. “Do you take breaks?”

No. Unless you’d like several minutes to address your guests, during the Motzi or surrounding the Candlelighting Ceremony, music at a DJ’s performance should be non-stop.

9. “Do you carry property and liability coverage?”

Yes.

10. “Can my child supply his own CD’s if he wants something special played?”

It depends–remember those questionable lyrics! Some DJs say no, others don’t care since they want you to be pleased. Chances are, they’ll have his favorite songs in their repertoire, anyway. Some DJs utilize new formats (such as MP3) and can’t play standard CD’s, cassettes or vinyl on their equipment. A great DJ toy was introduced to the Mobile DJ industry a few years ago: laptop software holding thousands of songs in memory! All a DJ requires are speakers and a mic. Less for him to schlep! Find out in advance. (Be SURE he has backup in the event of a hard drive crash.)

11. “Would you allow my child to ‘DJ?’”

Extroverted kids get a kick out of it. Ask the DJ if he’ll teach your child how the POTS work and how to CUE a song using the headphones. Letting your child TALK UP THE POST of his favorite tune will be a highlight for him, so be sure the cameras are rolling. The DJ may chuckle and feel “cheap thrills,” but kids eat this up. Don’t overdo it. One song. Your child only, no friends. Otherwise the DJ will be inundated and might, rightly so, object. (NOTE: some DJs may grumble at this one, anyway.)

12. “Do you need my input?”

You bet! Your contribution is essential and ought to be welcomed. You should always have relaxed dialogs and feel at ease speaking with your DJ.

13. “If I put my backside in, then put my backside out, then put my backside in and then shake it all about, are you going to laugh at me?”

Not out loud.

The Specifics of Transferring Videos to a Mini DVD

If you have a video camera, you probably appreciate all the advantages of small DVDs, which are so convenient to use but hardly so convenient to store. Probably you are also asking yourself how you can copy the information from a bunch of mini DVDs to one normal-size DVD.

If the DVD is copy protected, burning it is not an easy task. You may need to create a backup copy of a DVD you love, so that when the original becomes scratched beyond repair, you still have a media with your favorite movie. Minor scratches to the DVD surface can be polished but there is always a moment when the media itself can’t be repaired at all. In such cases it is easier to purchase a new copy of the DVD than to try to repair it. But this works for DVDs, which are still available in the store and as you know, many DVDs are hard to find there.

Video cameras are a great asset of the technological age. Unfortunately, after you get home from vacation or the family event, the camera must be hooked up to the television in order to view your memories. Thus, it is more time consuming. Plus, it is hard to send the DVD to Grandma, or another loved one, so he/she can enjoy watching a fun time.

The easiest way to achieve this is to copy your movies to a normal-sized DVD. You can play such DVDs on your computer or you can make copies of them (and give them to your relatives and friends).

In fact, the process of copying a Mini DVD to a normal-sized DVD is not so difficult and it is much easier than copying a copyright protected DVD. Of course, it has its intricacies but you do not have to buy decrypting software or rip DVDs.

The first intricacy is that your computer’s player might not be able to play the mini DVD. But don’t worry, maybe your laptop or desktop computer will be of more use. Another requirement for success is that you have a DVD writer. So, connect the camera to the computer and copy the files to a folder on your hard drive. Edit the information, if necessary. For instance, you can shrink the movies. After you have prepared your data, burn it to a DVD the usual way.

Now that you know the basic answer to the question: how do I copy a mini DVD, enjoy your vacations and special events to the fullest. Take video after video. You can always transfer mini DVDs to one regular DVD. Plus, you can edit out all of the segments not meant for keeps. Then, you can make copies for friends and family, or watch on the television or computer whenever you choose.

How to Choosing a Mini Dv Camcorder

Buying a Mini DV camcorder is like buying a car: though the priciest models cost eight times as much as the cheapest, they all have essentially the same parts and they kook similar to the uninitiated. So why spring $4,995 for a JVC GY-DV500U when a Samsung SCD67 has an MSRP of $600?

Or, to go even further, why not just get a nice analog camcorder for $300 on the street? The short answer is, if you don’t plan to copy or edit your tapes, go right ahead: the quality of Hi8 camcorders is quite good. Otherwise, Mini DV is an overwhelmingly superior format because you can make exact digital copies, you can make edits without loosing quality and (with some maintenance) you can make your precious videos last forever. Also, the ability to connect with a single cable and edit digital footage with an up-to-date desktop computer is amazingly powerful, even with software you can

learn in an hour.

So let’s make a quick survey of the Mini DV format, to help you decide how much camcorder to buy and how much to pay for it.

For the Casual Shooter

Today, you can find many fine DV camcorders for $1,000 or less, all chocka-block with nifty features. Models like the Panasonic PV-DV101, the RCA CC9360 and several others use imaging chips (CCDs) with a generous 680,000 pixels, which produce very high-quality video images.

A few entry-level cameras lack some useful features that might be found in a more expensive

camcorder. If you just want to point and push, you may not miss the lack of manual shutter, iris, focus or white balance; but you can’t take control of your camcorder without them. Many models lack analog (S-video and/or composite) inputs, which means you cannot copy your old tapes to the camera in order to convert them to the DV format for archiving.

The Canon ZR20 is one of several models with a color viewfinder, which is better than black and white because it shows a truer picture of what you’re getting (external screens are not as accurate as

internal finders.)

Finally, a couple of camcorders in the under-S1000 category, like the Sharp VL-WD450U, can capture stills on memory sticks that can be inserted in card readers and uploaded into your computer. Models with tape-only stills record each as a several-second freeze frame, which must be located and

transferred like any other video shot, and that’s a far less convenient process.

For the Serious Hobbyist

And what do you get if you move up to the $1,000 to $2,000 price range? Part of the answer’s

easy: all the desirable features mentioned previously that are often missing from low-end camcorders. If you consult the matrix, you’ll see that these models are loaded.

Because you’ll be using more accessories at this level, you’ll want an accessory shoe to hold a movie light or an external microphone. The Sony DCR-TRV17 and the Canon Elura 10 both have this desirable feature. A headphone jack is indispensable for any serious sound recording: think of headphones as a viewfinder for your ears. Most models in this range include them but a few omit this basic accessory.

In the $1,000 to $2,000 range, look for two very desirable editing features: remote controls and

docking stations. The JVC GR-DVM55 has both. In shooting, a remote is useful for wildlife photography and other special applications. In editing, however, it is essential, because you can set your camcorder safely aside and run all its controls from the remote.

A docking station works just like the same animal on a laptop. Instead of wrangling spaghetti cords and tiny plugs and sockets every time you lash up your edit rig, just plug everything permanently into the docking base and then attach the camcorder when you are ready to edit.

For the Budding Professional

Camcorders between $2,000 and $5,000 are intended for the dedicated amateur, for education, corporate and government applications and even broadcasting.

The quality imaging of many of these camcorders comes from a three-chip design. By directing each primary color of white light to its own dedicated CCD, they obtain better color and higher resolution than single-CCD camcorders.

High-end camcorders also add key professional features. The Canon XL1S for example, offers interchangeable professional-grade lenses, including several designed for it, in particular.

Another major improvement is in professional XLR microphone inputs, which are far superior to amateur mini-plugs for many reasons. In addition, one model, the JVC JY-VS200U, includes an audio level meter built right into the viewfinder.

Finally, some high-end models use optical image stabilization instead of electronic. Though both

systems work well, the optical approach generally results in higher resolution and higher video quality.

Last but far from least, the best Mini DV camcorders are engineered and built with satisfying ruggedness and precision. To return to our auto metaphor, the controls work with the elegant, positive feel of a BMW or Jaguar — with what the French like to call “exactitude.”

How (and Where) to Buy

Like car shopping, buying a camcorder should involve judicious test drives; but how are you supposed to do this? Most local camera stores have dropped camcorders completely; though if you live in a megacity, you could get it easily.
