Toshiba Libretto U100 Laptop Review

The Toshiba Libretto U100 is one of the smallest laptop notebook i have layed my hands on. With its wonderful specifications, you will find it irresistible. You probably will have to purchase yours. When i first bought mine, i had all it takes in my laptop notebook. It weighs about 2.16 pounds, so i feel so comfortable whenever i have it on me. It is quite light, and it should be carried with care. One thing about light laptop computers are that you think they are light, and you carry them carelessly, which in turn result in some damages. A lot of care should be given to it.

Using a 1.20 GHz Intel Pentium M processor, with a RAM size of 512 MB runnng on 333MHz, you will find out that it is good enough. It is fast enough for me to get my assignment done in good time. Although, i know that there are better ones running at an incredible fast rate, but i am content with its speed, in as much as it doesn’t develop a fault. I have actually used it for 1 year, and 8 months, and it is still functioning so well. Also having a hard disk drive space of 60 GB, i am pretty sure i have enough space to keep my multimedia files, music, movies, photos, and finished assignments. Although, not the best too, but i am content.

You can be sure that there are other features. I want to tell you about its network connectivity features. Having a 10/100 Ethernet, with a Wireless PCI card of 802.11b/g, LAN and modem ports. You will find out that if you choose to go wireless, you got it, and if you decide to go wired, then all you need is yours.

It also some features such as a docking connector, USB ports, and an RGB mini connector. All these are just to let you know that this laptop notebook is a complete one.

Going down it is 7.2-inch widescreen display, you will find out it is all you ever dreamed of. With a resolution of 1,280 x 768, you will get a brightness that is equal to its capacity. Toshiba Libretto U100 has been designed for your best laptop computer choice, so take it.

It also did not leave out its security features, such as finerprint reader, and verification technology. With this you will truely believe that this Toshiba Libretto U100 is one good laptop notebook that is a real time award winner.

Gaming Laptops – Will Solid State Drives Replace Hard Drives?

Recently, in the world of laptops, there seems to be a major push to replace traditional Hard Disk Drives HDDs with the newer and speedier Solid State Drives SSDs. This issue presents a challenging question for future laptop buyers and especially for those considering buying a gaming laptop.

Which data storage system should you go with?

Now, SSDs or Solid State Drives are not new, they have been around since the 70′s but were mainly used in niche applications in the past. Only recently have computer makers been utilizing SSDs for their machines, especially in laptops. Will these flash drives replace one of the last hold-outs of movable parts in data storage – the hard disk drive?

What is a Hard Drive?

Most computer users are familiar with Hard Disk Drives since they are presently found in most computers and laptops. An HHD stores data on rotating magnetic platters which have different speeds, that’s why you often see 5400 rpm abd 7200 rpm associated with Hard Drives. Data is written to and read from these platters by a block of read/write heads, which are controlled by a micro-controller.

Since your information can be stored in different parts on a Hard Drive, the time needed to get and retrieve data can significantly vary. Keep in mind, these devices are movable mechanical parts so they are prone to all the problems associated with moving parts and can sometimes fail, i.e. crash. Most of us have been there, done that!

What is a Solid State Drive?

Now SSD is an entirely different creature from a Hard Disk Drive. Solid State Drives uses a flash memory chip managed by a micro-controller to store its data. The major thing to remember, SSD usually have slow write times but have very quick read times. Since most users read rather than write information, SSDs can be much faster than HDDs.

In addition, SSDs have no moving components so they are more durable and much quieter than traditional HHDs. Plus, you can use less power consumption and there are less problems with vibrations interfering with ongoing operations.

What you have probably already guessed by now, SSDs are perfectly suited for laptops and smaller devices such as Netbooks. The growing popularity of these very handy portable machines has pushed SSDs to the forefront of computer technology. Our need for speed has always been insatiable, but so too, has our need to make things smaller and sleeker.

SSDs are better suited for these devices and all major laptop makers such as Dell, Apple, HP, Levono… have all lately begun to deliver laptops with SSDs. Toshiba, which is one of the world’s largest semiconductor manufacturers, has also started producing laptops with SSDs. They also invented NAND flash memory, these chips are commonly used in different memory cards such as SmartMedia and CompactFlash. Again, the major advantages being the faster access times, lighter weight, less power consumption, more resistant to impact and much more durability.

Another trend where we see SSDs taking hold is in the Netbook market. This is a relatively new trend since the Netbook was only launched by Asustek in the fall 2007 with its first Eee PC. Other laptop makers such as Lenovo, MSI, HP, Dell… have all followed along and jumped on this very popular and growing sector of the laptop industry.

The Cost Of SSDs Are Higher

One of the major obstacles to using SSDs has to be cost. SSDs are more expensive than HHDs but prices will eventually fall as production costs decreases. However, for now there is a marked different and many laptop buyers will go with the cheaper HHDs.

Another related issue is the amount of memory SSDs can support. Because of the cost, many of the present day SSDs have comparably low storage amounts in order to keep the overall cost of a device down. However, we are now seeing larger SSDs which support 64 GB, 128 GB and 512 GB of memory. We even have one SSD drive which can store 1 TB (Terabyte) of data produced by PureSilicon.

Another thing to consider, with SSDs you don’t need cache since system caches are usually made to solve hard drive performance problems. This can be a way to save money on future devices since cache is expensive.

The Future of SSDs

The real future of SSDs have to be realized in the growing popularity of ultra-portable devices like Netbooks, mini-laptops and the like. The SSD is perfectly suited for these kinds of portable devices and as consumer demand grows stronger, the future of SSDs looks very promising indeed.

Another market for SSDs has to be in gaming laptops, which are ideally suited because gamers use their machines mainly to read rather than write data. Plus, gaming laptops and gamers want the best possible performance at whatever cost; they don’t mind spending the big bucks if they can get top performances in return.

Major gaming specialists such as Alienware, do offer the option of SSDs in many of their laptops and even in some desktop machines. Other gaming laptop makers are following in the same direction. As with any technology there is a lag time before the old is replaced with the new. The traditional hard drives will be around for quite some time yet, but its days may just be numbered.

For the laptop buyer, which type of drive you finally choose will mainly depend on the purpose of your new device. If you’re looking for a quiet, long lasting, speedy Netbook that can take more than a few hard knocks, then you should be looking at a SSD equipped machine. If you want a traditional desktop computer or a desktop replacement laptop, then you can save money by going with an HDD equipped device, these have worked perfectly fine for years and will be around for some time in the future. Of course, if you’re into gaming laptops and want a state-of-the-art machine, then a Solid State Drive may be your best option, assuming money is no object.

Looking to buy a Laptop? Think about a Netbook!

is a Netbook

A Netbook (InterNET and noteBOOK) is a class of Laptop computer designed for wireless communication and access to the Internet. Netbook is primarily designed for web-browsing and emailing. Netbooks are gaining grounds on their compact design, slimmer looks and sleeker appeal.

Netbook is a Notebook computer with a low-powered x86-compatible processor (compatible with PC standard software), small screen (no larger than 10 inches), small keyboard, equipped with wireless connectivity, lightweight (under three pounds) and generally with no optical disk drive. They sometimes have Solid State Drives (SSDs) instead of Hard Disk Drives, which are lower capacity but have no moving parts and should, in theory, increase battery life and speed. Netbooks can run either Linux or Windows XP.

Why a Netbook

The obvious question is why should anyone buy a device with a smaller screen, slower processor, no optical drive when  you can get a full-featured notebook?

When it comes to a portable computer, the things that matter to most are speed and convenience.A Netbook is more convenient because it is lighter, and it usually has a lightweight operating system. The processor itself isn’t as powerful, but there’s much less processing that needs to be done with Windows XP or Linux in order to be usable.

If we are just looking for a portable computer to take along with us while traveling, to check e-mail, chat on Skype, watch some Youtube videos, take some notes, then a Netbook is what we want. Where as if we’re going to do intensive image editing, multimedia authoring, gaming etc then a Notebook/Laptopi is more suited for our needs.

Don’t confuse these low cost Netbooks with some of the sub-compact full featured Notebooks that are also out there. Sony, Dell and others also offer small lightweight Notebooks that have all the features of a full size computer in a tiny package but at a hefty price of $1400 and up. Some of these have plenty of power and features and up to 9 hours of battery life. These are real computers that are just packed into really small cases.

How does it compares to a regular Notebook

Let’s see the differences between a typical Netbook and a regular Notebook. Features of Dell Mini 9  Netbook  are compared with a regular sized Dell Inspiron Notebook below:

Inspiron Mini 9

Proecessor: Intel Atom Processor N270

Screen: 8.9”

Weight: 5.9lbs.

Battery: 32WHr Battery (4 cell)

Processor speed: 1.6 GHz

Memory: 1GB DDR2, 8GB SSD Memory

OS: Windows XP Home

Options: Camera, Bluetooth

Cost: $299

Inspiron 1525

Processor: Intel Pentium Dual Core T4200

Screen: 15.6” Wide Screen, Optional Hi-Res

Weight: 2.28 lbs.

Battery: 6-cell battery

Processor speed: 2 GHz

Memory: 4GB, Disk 320GB

OS: Windows Vista

Options: Camera, Bluetooth, ext Bat, More mem

Cost: $699

Pros compared to a regular Laptop:

- Excellent portability due to small size and light weight

- Good enough for basic computer tasks

- Relatively low cost

Cons compared to a regular Laptop:

- Small screen/lower resolution, small keyboard due to small size

- Limited processing power

- Hardware upgrades can be more challenging

- Due to lower processing capabilities, size and cost, advanced features are less adopted (FireWire, HDMI, etc…)

Which Netbook to buy?

It seems that Initially Netbook category was lead by Asus, Acer, but today computer giants Dell and HP jumped into the race.

According to the PcWorld.com the TOP 10 Netbooks are:

1. Asus EEE PC 1000HE

2. Acer Aspire ONE AOD150

3. Lenovo IdeaPad S10

4. Acer Aspire One (XP-Based)

5. Asus Eee PC 1000 XP

6. HP Mini 2140

7. Asus N10Jc

8. HP Mini 1000

9. Dell Inspiron Mini 9

10. MSI Wind U100

As with any purchase, you have to decide for yourself on what suits you best.

So go ahead explore the world of Netbooks and see if it’s a better choice compared to a Laptop. While the Laptop market is declining in this economy, interestingly the Netbook sales are predicted to be on the rise.

Mini-Notebooks: Small Is Huge

Notebooks are becoming an essential mobile accessory thanks to their easy portability and connectivity facility. Imagine the joy of surfing net from the comfort of wi-fi enabled pool side hotel area or the cafe without notebooks? With the rapid changing technology, conventional notebooks are no longer fashionable.

With powerful and advanced technology wrapped in a sleekly contoured compact manner, currently mini notebooks or ultra-mobile PCs as they are called have captured the attention of techno geeks. Even the smaller in size, the functionality of all other parts have not been compromised on mini notebooks. Fast hard disk drive, equivalent processor, high-speed DRAM , reasonable-sized keyboard for real typing and even intuitive Touch Panel pointing device that can be used with either its stylus or even a finger; all features are available in mini notebooks.

Mini notebooks can do what any other laptop or desktop can do. Rapid response time and ease of program modification are important advantages of mini notebooks. No doubt notebooks provide better visual experience, but at close to seven pounds, it could also be the cause of a bad back. Mini notebooks lower the heavy load strain common to conventional notebooks. Weighing around 2.6 pounds, these mini notebooks can still easily fit in a backpack or large handbag. Mini notebooks consume less power and as a result the heat generated is also low as compared to desktops or big notebooks. The radiation generated is also considerably lower. This is another advantage of mini notebooks.

However, mini notebooks do have its share of deficiency. The small screen might be a problem for some people. Others may be concerned because some model of mini notebooks store less data and sometimes run out of battery power faster than larger notebooks. The shrunken keyboards on the mini notebooks can also be difficult for the sausage-fingered. Mini-notebooks lack the raw power of their larger counterpart. It`s difficult to find discrete graphics in these categories. But without paying the hefty prices of traditional ultraportables, true portability is available in mini notebooks.

Mini notebooks have occupied only a small niche because of its expensive price and the shortcomings. Notebook manufactures have worked upon these shortcomings and as a result mini notebooks have advanced features to make up for earlier shortcoming. Manufactures are optimists that the consumers of this pocket pc will grow in coming period. With widespread use of broadband and online transactions, more and more people will prefer to use mini notebooks.

The advanced features available in some recently launched mini notebooks include flash memory storage of 4-8 gigabytes, larger Keyboard Pitch (16.8mm), has mobile computing feature, New fingerprint technology that allows users to bypass multiple password entry with one swipe of the finger, built-in wireless functionality, built-in wireless functionality, camera, biometric fingerprint security, long lasting battery up to 5hours and Battery charging state available in the Power-on Mode, not just in the Power-off Mode .

Some upcoming models also have screen size varying 8.9-inch to 10-inch and advanced features such as data encryption, multiple print storage, Bios fingerprint authentication, individual fingerprint application assignment, fingerprint website access and single touch boot features. Considering all the advanced features available, mini notebook can be really considered as cost effective.

Mini notebooks are a great information and communication companion, anytime and anywhere. However, before buying mini notebook, it`s advisable to do thorough research on it. Make a list of the features you are looking for in mini notebook. Go for genuine brands and pay attention to its after sales service and reliability aspect. Even after you decide which model you want to buy, it`s a good idea to get hands-on experience on your choice of model so that you can be rest assured of its performance.

The World on the Lap is the Laptop Notebook

The laptop notebook computer is a mobile computer that is small enough to be carted and kept on the lap while working. It does not weigh more than 1 to 6 kg. It is much smaller than its elder sibling – the desktop computer. A laptop does the same functions as the desktop one and therefore the parts are the same but of mini size. Instead of a mouse a touchpad does the tracking but if required a mouse can be attached. Internet tablets are used for the vital interspace link.

The laptops have both good and bad points. Due to technical and economic hurdles the unit cannot be upgraded easily. Regarding health matters the laptop is blamed for low ***** count as it is kept continuously on the ******* that causes the heat to rise to undesirable levels in this region of the body. To avoid it the mobile unit can be kept on the desk and does not necessarily have to be kept on the lap all the time.

Another obvious problem is that laptops can easily be stolen. Laptops are relatively slow and have less sound and graphics capability. Laptops are much more costly than desktops but of late the gap is closing. However Laptops consume less power. The performance is more or less the same as the desktop models and new generation models are becoming more efficient and user friendly.

How can such a small package hold such varied capabilities?

Laptops and desktops run on the same principles but the difference is how the components are fitted and fixed. In a desktop there are motherboard, video card, hard drive etc. The monitor, keyboard and other incidental items are connected without wires or with cables but there is sufficient space for extra cards, cables while allowing for flow of air. In a laptop the screen and keyboard rests on the side of the box. The design of the laptop is small and flat wherein all the pieces fit in snugly. Thus the space is compact allowing for conservation of power and less production of heat.

The CPU is the brain of the computer and a fan and heat sink system with plates and channels are required to cool it. But a laptop runs on a lower voltage resulting in less speed. Instead of pins and socket as in a desktop, in a laptop balls are used. However it means that the processor cannot be removed separately. The batteries of laptops that run fast suffer from being frequently run down. The Apple G4 processor tries to neutralize this defect.

Laptops use mini sized fans, heat spreaders and heat sinks. Some use liquid coolants to keep down the temperature. The CPU`s of the laptops are placed near the edge of the box allowing for hot air to be released without flowing over other components. A laptop also has a hard disk drive wherein is stored the operating system, data and application files.

The mechanism of memory differs from one laptop model to another. Usually smaller memory modules are used to economize on space. Both run on electricity but a laptop can also function on batteries.

Every invention begins with a dream. In 1970 Alan Kay of Xerox had such a vision of a portable computer approximately the size of a notebook. He never went much ahead with the idea but set the balls rolling. In 1979 the first working portable computer was made by William Moggridge of Grid Systems. Others like Apple soon jumped in to complete the success story.

With the rest of the notebook industry rushing to grab a piece of the Netbook market share, Samsung has responded by producing the Samsung NC10 Netbook. Like many Netbooks in the market, the NC10 is 10.2 inches wide and has all the basic Netbook necessities such as a 1.3 mp camera, 802.11 b/g WiFi and runs on Microsoft Windows XP Home. It is powered by a 1.6 GHz Intel Atom processor, 1GB of RAM and has a 160GB hard drive.

The Samsung NC10 has no frills minimalist design and it comes in white or blue. It has a matte exterior and is adorned with a reflective Samsung logo. It simple design and rounded corners gives it a more professional design compared to other Asus and MSI Netbooks. Weighing at just 2.8 pounds, it is also lighter than most of the other Netbooks in the market (which usually weigh more than 3 pounds).

The keyboard on the Samsung NC10 is 93% of the size of regular keyboards. The positioning of the keys are very comfortable, with a full size shift key below the enter button on the right. The great layouts of the keys take little time to get used to (unlike some other Netbook models).

Most of the new Netbooks in the market today have a glossy display screen, which greatly reduces its visibility under bright conditions. The screen on the Samsung model is matte, maintaining good visibility even under bright sunlight. Although it has the standard 1024 x 600 pixel screen, the images are crisp and vibrant.

The powerful Samsung NC10 resembles more of a laptop than a Netbook in terms of functionality. Due to the extra features found in this model, it cost a little more than the average Netbook. From the raving reviews received by this Netbook, I would say the price is well worth it!

Laptops – Which One Is The Best Choice For You

Laptops have been growing in popularity for many years now and every new model comes with more a greater selection of features and a more affordable price tag. It’s now easier than ever to find a model that can perform all the tasks you require without spending a small fortune. If you’re looking to replace an old model or are looking to purchase one for the first time then check out the tips below to help you decide what to go for…

What will you use it for?

Before you start your search, you need to work out exactly what you want from your laptop and establish how you will use it, this is the first step to getting the perfect model. For example, if you are a student then you might want to choose a model that has a large hard drive so that you’ve got plenty of room to store all of your photos, university work and music. You might also want to consider the size of the model as although it might be tempting to go for a 17 inch screen, a smaller and more portable model would be more practical if you are going to have to carry it to and from University every day. If you run a small business however and the machine is going to be your main computer then you could consider looking for a larger model which includes a high quality, wide LCD screen to help to reduce eye strain.

The different types

There are hundreds of different makes and models on the market but they can roughly be separated into three broad types…

Entry-level systems

This is the best choice for the budget conscious. It’s the basic option and ideal for those who just use laptops for straightforward office tasks such as word documents, spreadsheets, emails and internet use.

Desktop replacement system

If you want all the features of a desktop but in a smaller size then this could be ideal. This type of model is similar to desktop computers in terms of power and features but has a more portable format. This type of computer is best suited to those who want to edit photos or video and play games, as well as perform office tasks. These models do tend to be a lot heavier than other laptops though which is something you should bear in mind.

Netbooks

Mini laptops or Netbooks are small and compact and while their specifications are low, they’re perfectly adequate for general tasks and internet surfing. They generally use less powerful chips than in a laptops such as Intel Atom or Celeron but they are less expensive and more energy efficient. They don’t have in-built CD or DVD drives but they do have wireless connectivity. These models tend to be great if you want something portable and easy to carry.

Before you make an investment or decide on a replacement, you should consider what the primary use of the machine will be so that you can get the most effective model for your requirements.
