The Netbook: Big Future for a Small Notebook

This year’s Computex conference has shown us a preview of what the future holds for the Netbook industry.  Based on what we have witnessed so far, it’s looking like these mini laptops have the potential of gaining even more ground in the mobile computing market.

Chips to Extend Functionality

One of the challenges that Netbook manufacturers face has to do with performance.  Owing to the size of these devices, there have been certain compromises that had to be made when it came to a Netbook’s capabilities.  Several companies however, appear to have overcome this stumbling block with next generation chips designed to extend Netbook functionality.

Telecom company Qualcomm demonstrated their new Snapdragon chip which, the company says, will provide significant improvements in battery life, power consumption, speed and graphics capability.  Qualcomm refers to these devices as smartbooks as they will function similar to the way smartphones do.  They will have 3G support and always-on capability among other things.

Then there are other manufacturers that have introduced processors that are designed to improve multimedia functions in Netbooks.  Nvidia, for example, has showcased the Tegra, a processor that brings advanced mobile visual computing.  It functions as the main and graphics processor on a Netbook which should allow for enhanced viewing and at the same time, low power consumption.

Addressing Keyboard and Screen Dilemma

Another problem that a Netbook’s size poses is keyboard and screen real estate but it appears that with the latest Netbooks, these may no longer be an issue.  Synaptics is coming out with a new touch pad product to add to their line-up, the impressive ClickPad solution.  The ClickPad enables multi-finger gestures as a way of operating the device thereby eliminating the need for physical buttons.  On ClickPad, you will be able to zoom in through a two-finger pinch motion, switch on your device with a three-finger press and scroll through pages using two fingers among other things.

Those that want to extend their viewing pleasure on their Netbooks will also be pleased to know that there are high-quality LCD displays being produced that are designed to be used on Netbooks.   These screens are so flexible you can switch from a full color display to a standard black and white view, so you know these consume much less power as well.

The Road Ahead

The Netbook industry has, in the past, been dominated by devices that possess low power strength, limited technology and performance but the years ahead perhaps spell an increase in popularity what with the new developments currently cropping up.  There is a great potential for the creation of varied applications that can be utilized on Netbook and this can only mean good things for the consumer.  Look at the things you can do on a smartphone now?  Who would have thought that one day a cellular device will be able to support full scale Internet browsing?

The entry of Google’s Android into the Netbook industry may pose considerable challenges to Intel’s Atom, the platform currently used in most Netbooks.  Acer has already confirmed the use of Android on one of their Netbook models, the Aspire One.  GP

Great Challenge for eBay Resellers and Online E-commerce Store Owners

Brand name laptops such as Sony, IBM have long been the symbol of noble. Not only do they require a level of familiarity to use them but they also come with a hefty price tag.

According to Sophia, representative for wholesale dropship supplier, ePathChina, a laptop made by Sony or IBM could go for as much as four hundred to several thousands US dollars.

“For such a common consumer electronics the brand name laptop has become the definition of exclusivity and cutting-edge fashion,” says Sophia.

Now there’s a new player in town and wholesale prices are tumbling.

According to ePathChina’s Sophia, China wholesale manufacturers are making mini latops for a fraction of the price of better-known Japanese and America manufacturers.

“The average mini laptops made by a China electronics manufacturer goes for between 100 and 1000 USD, commonly half less than the average price of the similar brand name laptops,” according to Sophia.

With dropship suppliers’ profits could even potentially be higher due to the lack of shipping or double handling fees. Sophia says this puts laptop owners and resellers in a fantastic position.

“Resellers now can find cheap laptops from China, put on a gigantic mark up then sell them on eBay and get huge returns,” according to Sophia.

However, it is vital that eBay resellers make sure they get a wholesale supplier that is reputable and has a QC process beyond question.

“Laptops are expensive items so a faulty laptops won’t only damage your eBay seller reputation, it will completely destroy it,” says Sophia.

“ePathChina has a flawless double QC process and offers both a delivery guarantee and a one year warranty,” according to Sophia. “Resellers can put their customers in ePathChina’s hands with confidence.”

Two things about battery-life measurements for laptops

Toshiba’s Digital Products Division (DPD), a division of Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc., is showcasing all of its latest educational products at the 2009 National Educational Computing Conference (NECC) being held at the Washington D.C. Convention Center (Booth #3218), June 28 to July 1, 2009. Toshiba’s mobile offerings for education include its newest mini NB205 for note-taking and laptop Toshiba PA3399U-1BRS battery training in early grades. Other offerings range from high-performance thin and light laptops like the Tecra® R10 and Portégé® R600 to the award-winning Portégé M750 Tablet PCs.

Two things about battery-life measurements for laptops: First, they usually bear little relationship to reality. I don’t know about you, but my “five-hour”often dies halfway between J.F.K. and LAX.

Claiming to be the industry’s first tablet PC with multitouch technology, Dell(NSDQ:Dell) ‘s Latitude XT2 laptop has a 12.1-inch WXGA (1280-x-800) LED touch-screen display that allows the user to control things like scrolling, panning, rotating and zooming, with simple gestures.

At the 2008 annual Usenix conference in Boston, Andrew Leung, a computer science researcher at the University of California, presented a finding that just about everyone must have suspected: The majority of an organization’s stored data sits untouched.

Adesso’s new Slimtouch Ergo wireless keyboard doesn’t just give you a set of keys — it also gives you a touchpad, like what you’d find on a laptop. That’s a plus for users who want complete control without having to find a flat surface for a mouse. However, the keys’ layout was more cumbersome than ergonomic, and the exclusion of certain features was puzzling.

Not only is this Dell Juicz Battery the only external Dell Inspiron 6000 battery available, but it’s also the only means of extending the laptop’s mobile power.

How is this unprecedented ThinkPad X200 Tablet PC Battery 8Cell battery power possible? The battery inside the QuickerTek product is actually several batteries fused together. These lithium-ion batteries provide 124Wh capacity – the highest charge density per gram of weight available anywhere. The Dell Juicz also comes with a 120/240 volt AC battery charger for fast recharges.

Can you imagine rolling your SUV downhill with an idle engine, in an attempt to meet the millage expectation that you were first promised when you bought it? It seems as if consumers are becoming less immune to the failures of these pompous claims made by automakers.

When I started working on this guide to the top 10 Apple stories of 2008

When I started working on this guide to the top 10 Apple stories of 2008, I thought that this was a relatively quiet year for Apple. After all, this wasn’t a year for blockbuster product introductions like the iPod or iPhone. It was, I thought, a year of incremental changes.

By the time I was done with my research, I’d changed my mind. This was a huge year for Apple. While there was no single triumphant product introduction, the company moved forward briskly on all fronts. It accelerated the iPhone’s revolution of the smartphone industry by upgrading hardware and software and introducing the App Store. It reversed its previously poor record on environmentalism. It continued to be financially successful in an economy where blue-chip companies are failing. And it bolstered its notebook and desktop computer line, struggled with false rumors about Steve Jobs’s health, fought a company looking to make Mac clones, and struggled with its MobileMe service.

Called Sonata, the lithium-ion IBM X61 Tablet Battery can withstand up to three years of recharging before losing its maximum capacity, according to Boston Power. Most batteries used today have a lifespan of about half that much. In addition, the battery recharges in only 30 minutes, which is much faster than traditional laptop batteries, and is less likely to overheat.

But you don’t have to be a Scrooge just because tough times require you to be a tightwad. Spread good cheer by taking advantage of the fact that consumer electronics firms are slashing prices to the bone. Although you’ll find deepest discounts for higher-ticket items such as MP3 players, laptops, and flat-screen televisions, you’ll find bargains all over the spectrum. To help you stay within budget during what is likely to be a cash-strapped holiday season, we’ve put together a list of 35 high-tech gadgets under $100 to bring joy into any household.

Clearly, this wasn’t one of Apple’s bigger announcements of the decade; Apple didn’t introduce any breathtaking new products, like it did with the iPhone in 2007, or the iPod in 2001, that won instant converts to the Apple brand. No, this one was for the folks who are already fans.

The S121 gets up to eight hours of IBM T60 Battery life with its 512-GB SSD and Asustek’s Super Hybrid Engine, a technology created through redesigning hardware, software, and BIOS to boost performance and power efficiency. Asustek claims the technology extends battery life 35% to 53%.

The speed was noticeably improved. I’ve tested a number of OQO devices over the years and always found them on the slow side. Not the model 2+. By upping the RAM to 2 GB and using the Intel Atom processor, OQO has really boosted the performance of the model 2+.

In addition, the Vaio P Series Lifestyle PC, unveiled Wednesday at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, is about the size of a business envelope and as thin as a cell phone. As a result, the device is small enough to slip into a jacket pocket or handbag, while still delivering full PC functionality.

The emergence of new leadership is a significant change for Apple. But it’s a positive one. It would be necessary even if Jobs was as healthy as an ox. Companies, no matter how big or small they are, and no matter how healthy or sick their leaders are, need a plan of succession, what to do in case something happens to the leadership. Investors, employees, and partners should know what the plan is, so they can have confidence on the company’s long-term future.

In theory, you should already be aware that SSDs are not the next best thing to sliced bread. (Peanut butter is, except if you’re allergic.) However, they do provide interesting — and worthwhile — transitional points for our current crop of Netbooks and notebooks. Let’s dive in and examine the genre, and bust a couple of myths while we’re at it.

The new Latitude XT 2 can run up to 11 hours and 28 minutes without a recharge with the use of two six-cell batteries, according to Dell. The second Dell Latitude E5500 Battery is sold as an option.

There’s also the novelty factor. We in computing just love new and different things. That may explain why new editions of Netbooks seem to show up faster than baby bunnies at a rabbit farm.

The chipmaker in January entered the mini-laptop market with the introduction of the i.MX515 processor, which the company claims is less expensive and delivers longer battery life than Intel’s Atom processor, which dominates the fast-growing Netbook market today.
